One requirement of this class is to create a visual journal, which is a record of your aesthetic experiences and awareness. It is important to get in the routine of keeping this journal for many reasons:
  • To notice details and analyze meaning behind images.
  • To help us become visually literate
  • To research specific artists and eras in art history
  • To understand an artist’s intent, and inform our own.

Due dates: Visual journal entries are usually due on block days. Expect to have one due every week. Responses to others’ work is due by the following Monday.

Format:
  • Essays should be no shorter than 250 words. Images and text will be posted to the class wikispace site. Using a wikispace will enable us to share our work with one another and respond appropriately.

  • When writing about pieces of art, please include the artist’s full name, the title of the work, and the date. The source for any quotation, picture, or idea that is not your own must be cited in a footnote or an endnote; otherwise, it constitutes plagiarism.

  • Be mindful of spelling and grammar. Use full sentences, write thoroughly and thoughtfully. Express your ideas using proper visual art vocabulary.

Assessment: Grades will be determined by the clarity of your communication, the thoroughness of your idea, and following the criteria of the assignment. Have your assignments posted at the beginning of class due date. Each assignment is 5 points: (3 points for your own post, and 1 point for each of two responses left for others).
+ ----5 points—clear and thorough.
----4 or 3 points—adequate or not quite thorough.
- -----2, 1, or 0 points –unsatisfactory or incomplete.
